NORTH STAR EVENT

A week of inspiration and wonder to celebrate the best of Science, Technology, Engineering, arts and Maths (STEAM).

We want to connect our young people to inspirational people and places which will spark their imaginations and help them see the great opportunities in STEAM in the UK.

Led by Professor Brian Cox, students from across Rotherham and Sheffield will experience a world class day programme. Secondary schools can sign up to join our interactive live streamed events from their classrooms and enable students to connect to leading scientists, engineers and educators who are charting a course to a sustainable future. We hope that students will finish the week inspired for the future and confident in the opportunities for great careers stretching ahead of them.

The North Star programme promotes innovation and opportunity in the Sheffield City Region to inspire the next generation to consider careers in STEAM subjects. We back a vision for the UK to become the best place in world to practice Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths, and believe that inspired communities can chart their own path to health, wealth and happiness.

Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851

Established in 1850 by Her Majesty Queen Victoria to organise the first world trade fair: The Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations. Prince Albert was appointed President and took personal charge of the whole complex operation. In just sixteen months a site was chosen in Hyde Park, the iconic Crystal Palace (the largest covered structure on earth at that time) was designed, manufactured and erected and 100,000 exhibits assembled so that the Great Exhibition opened on time on 1 May 1851. It was an enormous success, attracting more than 6 million visitors and made a substantial profit. When the Exhibition closed in October 1851, the Royal Commission was then established as a permanent body to spend the profits in realising Prince Albert’s ambition to “increase the means of industrial education and extend the influence of science and art upon productive industry.

Fast forward 170 years and The Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 and the Royal Commission very generously provided a grant to support the delivery of science summer school events in Rotherham and Skelmersdale as part of a broader wrap around programme of STEM support in both towns.
