NORTH STAR SCIENCE SCHOOL WILL RETURN TO SOUTH YORKSHIRE IN WINTER 2021

23 MARCH 2021

North Star is part of the national Science Summer School initiative launched in 2012 by Professor Brian Cox CBE and Lord Andrew Mawson OBE. The first project played a significant role in the incredible turnaround of a failing school in east London.

Placing STEAM at the centre of the curriculum has helped to steer St Paul’s Way Trust School back to academic success. The school has also played a transformational role in helping to rebuild a dysfunctional local community and a street along St Paul’s Way in Tower Hamlets. In 2021, St Paul’s Way Trust Science Summer School celebrates its 10th anniversary.

New projects connecting directly with local communities are rolling out around the country with Rotherham leading the way. Events in 2021 and 2022 are now in planning including Skelmersdale in West Lancashire and Ballymena in Northern Ireland. Well North Enterprises is also in discussion with Brooklands Museum to create a Surrey Science School in 2022 at the birthplace of British motor-racing and aviation.

South Yorkshire has a proud industrial heritage built from the power of steam. Inventions and improvement in manufacturing processes in the region played a key role in the industrial revolution which transformed the world.

Rotherham is once again the home of world-class manufacturing with The Advanced Manufacturing Park developed by Harworth and the wider South Yorkshire Innovation District leading the way.

It is THE place in the UK for people to connect, co-locate, collaborate and innovate; attracting business and investment

from all over the world. It is home to leading brands including Boeing, Rolls-Royce, McLaren Automotive, Ibstock Brick and the UK Atomic Energy Authority.

The North Star programme promotes and applauds innovation and opportunity in the Sheffield City Region to inspire the next generation to consider careers in STEAM subjects.

In December 2020, we welcomed over 2,000 students from Rotherham, Sheffield and beyond to our first ever North Star Science School.

A blended live and digital programme showcased the cutting edge of science and engineering exposing students to the fascinating range of opportunities which a career in STEAM can offer.

Throughout the North Star event week, young people were exposed to inspirational talks from leading scientists and engineers and engaged in interactive and creative activities delivered by our partners.

Professor Brian Cox CBE joined us for the launch day, giving his own keynote lecture on ‘Space, Time and Black Holes’ before answering questions submitted by the students taking part.

North Star is now creating a year-round programme to build practical links between world-class businesses and our partner schools in the Sheffield City Region.

Given further funding, significant opportunities exist to expand the North Star event and develop a year-round programme to benefit future generations.

South Yorkshire Housing Association led the successful launch of North Star in 2020 working with Well North Enterprises, Science Summer School and Andrew Mawson Partnerships.

Now The Work-wise Foundation leads the project for 2021. We are an ambitious cross-sector partnership of local industry, education and community organisations. We believe that inspired communities can chart their own path to health, wealth and happiness. We see that beneath the regional vision for excellence sit the inspirational stories, endeavour and aspiration of thousands of people; like stars forming a galaxy.

We want to take the North Star Science School forward in 2021 to work successfully with local businesses, schools, and colleges and to form long lasting and meaningful partnerships.
